Every aspect of this special program also brings with it a variety of questions. We hope that the following may enlighten you to the specialness of this Interfaith Hospitality Program. If you don't see the answer to your question here, either contact the RAIHN President, Pete Hallagan, or look for the coordinators of on of the host churches that you may be familiar with. We are all here to happily answer your questions about the Rochester Interfaith Hospitality Network.

What is the scope of this program here in Rochester?
The National Interfaith Hospitality Network has given a group of caring people here in Rochester the "green light" to establish an organization as well as a team of participating churches and other organizations to serve a much-needed cause here in the Rochester area; that is, to provide temporary overnight accommodations to families who are without their homes on a temporary-displaced basis.

I thought there was public housing for homeless people already available in Rochester?
Although there are public tax dollars being spent on public housing for the homeless it doesn't cover all of the needs for FAMILIES in the special effort to keep families TOGETHER while they seek new housing (and sometimes new employment as well)

What does the RAIHN organization do versus what does each faith community do?
The overall responsibility for managing the program belongs to the non-profit corporation set-up as RAIHN (Rochester Area Interfaith Hospitality Network). The Board of Directors of RAIHN is responsible for:

  • Hiring a manager to run the program
  • Raise sufficient funds to run the program annually
  • Provide a day center facility and a transportation vehicle
  • Provide the staff to drive the transportation van
  • More specific responsibilities of RAIHN can be found HERE

On the other hand, the individual host congregations (faith communities) are responsible for providing a welcoming environment for the guest families approximately four times per year for a one-week period which includes:

  • Providing dinnertime meals (typically volunteer-cooked at home)
  • Providing a physical space for overnight accommodations
  • Providing the volunteer staff required to oversee the week's operations
